How to Create a Tie Dye Batik Pattern in Procreate

Today, I want to let you in on the secret to creating stunning tie dye batik patterns using Procreate. Trust me, once you see how easy and fun it is, you'll be hooked!

I remember the first time I tried my hand at batik patterns. The combination of rich colors and abstract backgrounds was both intimidating and fascinating. But with a little practice and the right tools, I discovered that creating these stunning patterns is not only achievable but incredibly rewarding and fun.

You’ll learn everything in my class called Floral Batik pattern, or scroll down for a step-by-step mini-tutorial👇

What You'll Learn in the class:

  • Making a unique abstract textured background.

  • Creating custom stamp brushes for your motifs.

  • Using blend modes and textures to elevate your design.

  • Transforming your artwork into a seamless repeating pattern.

Free Downloads:

Included in the class are 4 Procreate brushes and 1 color palette, exclusively for the members of Pattern Rebels. These tools are perfect for creating the floral batik pattern and can be used for both personal and commercial projects.

There’s also a Party Hat Procreate mockup, available as a download in this months Goodie Bag for our members.

And a Scallop Long pattern layout template including a mini-course on how to use the template, also for our members. Read more about the pattern layout template here.

Here’s a sneak peek of what you'll learn in the class:

Step-by-Step Mini Tutorial:

Step 1: Create the Background

  • Open Procreate and set your canvas size (I usually use 3000px in width and height, and start with the Pattern Perfect Template, which is free for Pattern Rebel members and is a game-changer when it comes to creating professional patterns quickly in Procreate.)

  • Select the Blurry Clouds brush to create an abstract textured background with light, flowing strokes.

  • Make a pattern of the abstract background. Flip the edges to the center and fill out the empty space. Learn this in the class over at patternrebels.com

Step 2: Design Your Motifs

  • Draw your floral motifs using the Wet Paint brush. Focus on simple, elegant shapes.

  • Convert the motif into a custom stamp brush in the brush library (which you can learn all about in one of my YouTube tutorials here)

Step 3: Apply Your Stamps

  • Stamp your motifs onto the background.

  • Use Blend Modes in layers to experiment with different effects, like Overlay or Multiply, to integrate the motifs beautifully into the background.

Step 4: Add Texture and Depth

  • Use the textured brush Watercolor Magic Texture Wet to add depth and richness to your pattern.

  • Adjust the opacity and layering of your texture for a more intricate design.

Step 5: Create the Pattern

  • Finally flip the edges to the center and fill the empty space.

  • Copy you canvas + paste it so that you’ll get a flattened image of your pattern tile

Step 6: Test your Pattern

P.S. This mini tutorial gives you a taste of the full class, where we'll dive deeper into each step and explore more advanced techniques.
