How to Create a Chunky Car Pattern in Procreate

Have you ever wondered how to create those charming, chunky kids' and baby patterns you see everywhere? The ones that look so fun and hand-drawn? Today, I'm excited to show you how to bring these playful designs to life using Procreate. This project is not only fun but also much easier to create than you might think!

When I first started working on this chunky car pattern, it looked a bit flat and boring. So, I continued to experiment and found a way to add patterns within the pattern to really make the design pop, and I’ll share all of my techniques in this class.

You’ll learn everything in my class called Chunky Cars, or scroll down for a step-by-step mini-tutorial👇

What You'll Learn in the class:

  • Drawing with the selection tool to create chunky-style patterns.

  • Using brushes to add patterned textures within your design.

  • Balancing your pattern and choosing colors.

  • Transforming your artwork into a seamless repeating pattern.

  • Testing your pattern tile to make sure it’s seamless.

Free Downloads:

In this class, you'll get 4 Procreate brushes and 1 Procreate color palette, exclusively for Pattern Rebels members. These resources are perfect for bringing your chunky cars pattern to life. All free for both personal & commercial use.

There’s also a wallpaper Procreate mockup, available as a download in this months Goodie Bag for our members.

Here’s a sneak peek of what you'll learn in the class:

Step-by-Step Mini Tutorial:

Step 1: Make a Sketch

  • Open Procreate and set your canvas size (I usually use 3000px in width and height, and I start with the Pattern Perfect Template, which is free for Pattern Rebel members.)

  • Make a rough sketch of your motifs with a pencil brush (my favourite is the Perfect Pencil from the Pattern Elements brush set.

Step 2: Draw the Motifs

  • Use the selection tool to draw the basic car shapes, focusing on a chunky, playful style.

Step 3: Add Patterned Textures:

  • Use the pattern brushes to add textures and patterns within your car shapes.

  • Experiment with different brushes to create a variety of effects.

Step 4: Create the Pattern

  • Finally flip the edges to the center and fill the empty space.

  • Copy you canvas + paste it so that you’ll get a flattened image of your pattern tile

Step 5: Test your Pattern

P.S. This mini tutorial gives you a taste of the full class, where we'll dive deeper into each step and explore more advanced techniques.
